for 2006, this is my new fly fishing book selection. The page
was overdue an overhaul, so one quiet Sunday afternoon I
decided to sit down and catalogue some of my favourite
books. Below is the result, all of these publications will
help further your fly fishing and fly casting knowledge. I
certainly found them invaluable. Plus there is something
for all you fly tying enthusiasts along with a few specialised subjects such as Saltwater Fly Fishing and Fly Fishing for Pike.

FISHING BOOKS - FLY CASTING |
 |
Spey Casting
Author : Simon Gawesworth. I had the privilege of
being coached by Simon in my late teens and early twenties,
before a childhood dream came true and I ended up working for
him at his famous fly fishing school, but enough about
that! This is THE book to buy
if you want to learn how to Spey Cast and I can assure you I am
not being biased! Simon is widely regarded as one of the
worlds leading fly casting experts, a reputation gained through
his pragmatic approach to the subject. Huge colour
photographs, superb diagrams and simple to understand
description. Need I say more, a MUST
have! £19.05 Purchase on line here |

The Essence of Fly Casting
Author : Mel Krieger. Another fly casting guru with a world wide
reputation. For those just starting off in fly casting I can
think of no better manual, for improving and advancing anglers,
this book should also have a place in your library. The
photographs are black and white, a clever option that really
works. The use of a white rod and line against a dark
background, illustrates Mel's advice beautifully. If you
require assistance with Roll Casts, Overheads and the Double
Haul, this book can help. But it goes much further, with
superb chapters on rod actions, choosing the right equipment and
how to make presentation casts. £11.34 Purchase on line here |

FLY
FISHING BOOKS - SALTWATER FLY FISHING - UK |
|

|
Saltwater Flyfishing -
Britain & Northern Europe
Author : Paul Morgan and friends. Not really a handbook
dedicated to Saltwater Fly Fishing on European shores, more a collection
of ideas rather than an instructional text. However, this book still makes for a
good read and is
well worth adding to the collection, if only to inspire. Chapters
include fly fishing for Mullet, Bass, Pollack, Garfish, Cod,
Coalfish, Sea Trout and even Blue Sharks! There is also an
interesting chapter on fly fishing for Pike in the Baltic.
This book also does much to dispel the myth that saltwater fly
fishing is something new on our coastline with evidence of
activity as far back as 1851!!! £19.95 Purchase on-line here

FISHING BOOKS - SALTWATER FLY FISHING - ABROAD |

Fly Fishing for Bonefish
Author : Chico Fernandez. If you have a trip
planned to an exotic location such as Florida, Cuba, the Bahamas
or perhaps the Seychelles, then this book could be of great
assistance. Providing in depth information put forward in
a simple and easy to understand manner, there is something for
everyone from novice to advanced bonefisher. Chico deals
with Bonefish diet, habitat, tides and the flies / equipment
required to be successful. As one who has been privileged
to cast for these awesome fish, I can honestly say that the
information gleaned from this book proved indispensable. £24.51 Purchase on-line here |

FISHING BOOKS - ALTERNATIVE FLY FISHING |

Pike on the Fly
Author : Barry Reynolds. There are plenty of guides out
there telling us how they discovered fly fishing for Pike, or
stumbled on a school of Bass and never looked back. In
reality these fish have long been the target of fly anglers, the
Pike in particular. However, very little has ever been
collated to form a hand book, until Barry Reynolds put together
this publication. Based on his experiences in the U.S.A.
and Canada, Reynolds describes fishing for Northern Pike, the
Muskellunge and Tiger Muskie. Though these latter fish are
not present in our own waters, there is still a huge amount of
invaluable information available here regarding the Northern
Pike, including sections on gear, flies and tackle. £8.76

Bob Church's Guide to the
Champions Fly Patterns
Author : Bob Church. Provides a comprehensive look into
the fly boxes of many expert competition fly fishers including names
such as Iain Barr, Dave Grove, Bob Church, Dave Shipman, Brian
Thomas and Brian Peterson. Set out in helpful chapters the
book details Nymphs, Dry Fly, Lures and Wet Flies. The
variety and creativity within many of the patterns is mind
boggling and some of the names even more so, the Church Hill
Chomper, Adams Abortion and Jammy Dodger all spring to
mind! Many may snub this book as it has been created by
competition anglers, however I would urge you to take a
look. Competition anglers also fish for pleasure, just
like everyone else and this book provides many patterns that
could provide the key on a difficult day. £10.49

Matching the Hatch
Author : Pat O Reilly. If you struggle to identify flies and are not sure how
to choose an imitation then this is definitely the book for
you. Illustrated with a whole series of quality
photographs, Matching the Hatch has been cleverly thought
out. Through his "Magnificent 7" (a series of
fail safe artificial patterns) and logical chapters such as
"7000 flies or just 7" Mr O'Reilly seeks to portray
the identification of insects important to fly fisherman in a
far more simplistic and easy to understand manner than many
before him. In fact we like this book so much that we use
it on a daily basis to assist tutoring our guests! £12.95

FLY FISHING |

Adventure
Fishing Author : Henry Gilbey. Henry is a great mate of mine and perhaps
one of the worlds finest angling photographers. In fact,
he is one of the only anglers I know who can resist picking up a
rod and stay behind the lens when the fishing is kicking off all
around him! In this, his first book, Henry takes us on a fishing
adventure like no other. Chapters include both freshwater
and saltwater species, with inspirational text throughout.
It is however the stunning images that set this book apart from
the rest and although Fly Fishing only appears briefly (look out
for me in the fly fishing for Pike section!) you can rest
assured that this is armchair angling at its very best! £11.19
