THE GALLERY - MARCH 2004

The season is well underway and my guests have already slipped their nets under more than a few fish to say the least.  14 days on the water provided some memorable moments and although the weather has not always been kind, who cares when the fish are biting!

Fly Fishing on the River Bray, very early season but there are still fish to be caught as Alex Taylor from America was only too willing to prove!

18th March 2004

Ladies really are taking to fly fishing in a big way these days and on many occasions, showing the men the way to go!  This is Alex Taylor who came all the way from the U.S.A. with her husband Patrick for a short break in the U.K. and managed to cram in a day of fishing too.  Nick Hart Fly Fishing provided them with a pick up / drop off service from the train station, organized accommodation in a comfortable inn and guided fishing on our exclusive stretch or the river Bray.

It was cold, the fishing was hard and it was my very first outing with new guide, Pete Tyjas, more about him in April.  But, success was the order of the day and Alex was over the moon with this Salmon Smolt caught while fishing a nymph upstream and returned carefully to make the long journey to the ocean.  A fly caught River Bray Salmon Smolt. A study in natures perfection.

After a good 10 minute battle this 4lb over wintered Clatworthy Trout finally gave into the rod of Mike Roberts. Taken on a size 12 Bobs Bits this fish is a credit to Wessex Water ranger, Dave Pursey. For guided trips to Clatworthy, including electric engine, comfortable boat seats and the use of Sage Rods call Nick Hart on 01643 831101.

Without doubt one of the best looking Rainbows I have landed for a guest in recent years.  Check out that tail!

This Clatworthy Rainbow deserves a close up!

29 - 31st March

Mike Roberts took a break from his champagne making business to try out fly fishing for 3 days.  He received the trip as a gift voucher and on his final session excelled himself by latching into the beautifully conditioned 4lb over wintered Rainbow Trout on Clatworthy reservoir in Somerset.  And, on a dry fly! Look out for my article on this venue coming soon in Trout Fisherman magazine.

As regular viewers of the site will know many of my clients have enjoyed catching Bass, Pike and Carp during guided trips, but this is a first. A Grass Carp.
Here is an unusual catch.  A small Grass Carp taken by Mike Roberts while fishing for Trout on Burton Springs.

What our guests say ...

The day was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable that I can remember in a long time - a superb antidote to the stresses of the office and probably the best Christmas present I have ever had.

Ewan Davy, Devon, June 2003

Your enthusiasm for fishing is so infectious and the way in which you instruct
so encouraging, it breaks down a lot of the 'mystique' that sometimes appears to surround fly fishing.

A Lambert, London 2003

We are back home now. With three full days of work done. I am wishing that I was  fishing once again. Alex and I had such a great time with you and Pete. We would like to have had it last longer. Next time I will catch the Salmon.

P Taylor, U.S.A., March 2004
