As you can
see from the web site much of my time in November has been
spent updating. However the winter months are becoming
more popular with anglers and I worked with several for a few
hours at a time on their casting technique. Most
memorable trip of
the month was definitely the father & son 2 day break with
Julian and Mike Fearnley. More on that below, plus some
advice on starting children off in fly fishing. As
you may have seen from the news page there is a new instructor
working for the business, Level 2 instructor, Pete Tyjas.
He and I have been hard at work looking at some new
venues which I will report on next month. I have also
been out on several shoots for Trout Fisherman magazine, look
out for the articles starting in the Feb 2005 issue. Email
Nick here.

Father
and Son Fishing.
27th
& 28th Nov 2004
Julian
Fearnley and his son Mike came for a 2 day course of
fly fishing and were rewarded with some excellent fish
and also superb weather. Many people put away
their rods at this time of year or leave learning
until the spring, however often the fishing in
November and December is very good.

I am often asked about
starting children off in fly fishing. There are
various things to consider. Firstly the pastime
takes an element of patience so it is better to have
plenty of short sessions rather than embarking on a full
day. As for tackle the usual 9 - 9 1/2ft rods are
far too large for the average child to handle and will
hinder their progress. Something in the 8 - 8
1/2ft range is far more suitable. If the rod is
rated for a 4 line, load it with a 5 or even a 6.
This will help load the rod more easily for a youngster
and if they see some progress they are far more likely
to remain interested. Of course safety is paramount
so ensure children are well aware about obvious things such as the
danger of water but also get
them used to wearing sun glasses as protection when
casting. Finally take them to a nice easy venue if
there is one thing that is sure to get a child excited
about fishing it is catching their first Trout, as you
can see from Mikes grin on the right! |

Fly Fishing
for Pike?!
So what is there for the
fly angler keen to keep their line wet in the winter
months? Well, tons actually. For a start there
are hundreds of small waters up and down the country which
will produce fantastic sport with hard fighting Rainbows
that will feed well and fight hard in the cold water
conditions. Then there are Grayling on the Rivers
and increasingly one of my favourites, Fly
Fishing for Winter Pike. All you need is an 8
- 9 weight rod, a few different lines, a short 7 ft leader
incorporating a steel trace and some large flies imitating
bait fish. If you don't have all the kit, we do, and
we provided guided
trips. E
mail here for details.

COMMENT :
This
is the third year I've been coming down to Exmoor to fish with you and
it just keeps getting better. From Wild Brownies on the Mole and Exe,
to
some big, hard fighting Rainbows on Exe Valley to my first ever
Grayling,
it's been fun, exciting and a challenge all rolled into one. It's been
the
perfect way for me to relax and recharge my batteries.
