With around 1900 yds of bank to explore the River Bray has much to offer. A wild fishery, this venue boasts a healthy head of trout, while also providing residence for migratory fish. There are many named pools, areas of shade, little meadow runs and fast boulder strewn lies. In fact something for everyone no matter their experience. Many anglers fishing with Nick Hart have caught their first fish on this river. The surrounding countryside is much flatter than that of Exmoor, but this is a different type of venue all together, much of the flow being similar to that of a chalk stream. This characteristic lends itself perfectly to dry fly fishing, so if this is your passion , the Bray is well worth a visit. Finally the Bray was the subject of a West Country Rivers Trust survey and management project through the season of 2000, which has further improved this already fine river.

Tackle Required : Trout : 7 - 8 1/2ft rod, # 4 / 5 Floating Line, Nylon in 2 1/2 - 5lb for tippets plus knotless tapered leaders from 7 1/2 - 12ft Polaroids!

Trout Flies : Dries : C.D.C. - F - Fly in various shades, black is good, dark Olive excellent. Elk Hair Sedge are brilliant here. Adams Midge, smut style flies. Sizes should include 20 - 12. Nymphs : Lot of Sedge on this river so caddis larvae are a must. Spider patterns such as the Snipe and Purple Again try small, 16 - 12, but be ready for a Sea Trout to grab those gold heads
Salmon / Sea Trout Flies : You cannot go wrong with a silver or regular Stoats Tail. Tie them on small plastic tubes, and low water doubles from 14 - 8. Day time is best tackled with large nymphs, a nice buggy Hares Ear with a Gold Head is ideal. Sea Trout and Salmon can be caught during the day, often while fishing upstream, but the only way to achieve this is to have a go!

Location : Nr. South Molton, Devon. A 30 minute drive from Exford. Excellent accommodation 5 minutes away if required.

Road Directions : From junction 27 of the M5 follow the road towards South Molton eventually picking up the B3227 towards Umberleigh and Torrington. The Bray is situated 4 miles along this road. A decent map is provided for each rod including road directions and river details.
