The River Torridge is set in stunning Devon scenery. Famous as the home of Tarka the Otter it is sometimes possible on this beat to watch one of these beautiful creatures laying on it's back munching an eel, while eating your own lunch, or perhaps pondering fly choice. The picture above shows the stretch known as Drummets Run. A short beat of around 500 yds this venue is however very diverse offering a few hours sport using a variety of techniques. The large Iron Bridge pool is also ideal for Spey casting practice. Species include some very nice wild Brown Trout, a good run of Sea Trout in summer ( night fishing permitted ) and the occasional Salmon.

Fishing the River Torridge in North Devon

Season : March 15 th to Sept 30 th.

Trout : Tackle Required : 7 - 8 1/2ft rod, # 4 / 5 Floating Line, Nylon in 2 1/2 - 5lb for tippets plus knotless tapered leaders from 7 1/2 - 12ft. Polaroid's!

Flies : Dries : C.D.C. - F - Fly, black is a must, March Brown tied with a Hare's Ear body and Grizzle Hackle, an Elk Hair Sedge or two. 16 - 20.

Flies : Nymphs : Pheasant Tails, Sawyer style, Gold Heads etc., they love them! Go very small with some, micro beads on an 18 catch very well. Czech Nymphs, especially with a dark Hare's Ear body. Some Caddis patterns. Sizes 18 - 10.

Sea Trout & Salmon : Tackle Required : 9 - 9 1/2ft rod, # 6 / 7 Floating Line and possibly an Intermediate, Selection of polyleaders, Nylon in 8 - 10lb for leaders. Chest or Thigh Waders. Gye Net.

Flies : Wee Doubles in # 14 - 10, patterns such as the Stoat's Tail ( inc. silver versions ) will be fine and work very well in low water or at night. Small tubes of 1/2 to 1 inch also work well, again the Stoat being a firm favourite. However, it is worth providing a few Willy Gunns and the odd Temple Dog in case of high, coloured conditions. I very often throw out a big gold head hare's ear, Sea Trout love them and often take when fishing upstream nymph tactics.
