Stillwater
Trout fishing in the U.K. is huge! Almost every corner
of the land has some kind of fly fishing available on venues
such as
Exe Valley Fishery totalling just a few acres to
reservoirs and other water storage facilities such as
Wimbleball that start at a few hundred acres and rise to
thousands. Fly fishing these locations tests every
aspect of an anglers knowledge demanding a variety of skills
including casting and a decent grasp of entomology.
Nick has
created small stillwater courses that encourage first time
fly fishers to head these miniature small venues, treating
them just like a golfer would a driving range. Master
the casting, learn a few knots and some basic entomology and
then concentrate on the all important details such as
locating the fish!
Soon enough
the casting comes together, you will be able to locate fish
and match the hatch. Now is the time to head to a
reservoir! Nick provides guided fly fishing on a
variety of large lakes from both bank and boat. His
many years of experience pleasure fishing venues across the
West Country and a spell as part of the England Fly Fishing
Squad will help you locate the fish quickly, pick the right
line, flies and tactics. Check out the details below
to find out the Stillwater Fly Fishing options available to
our guests.

FLY FISHING SMALL
STILLWATERS |
 |
Merely looking across an
expanse of stillwater leaves many first time anglers
daunted! The first step is to head to a small
stillwater and practice the skills that can easily
be adapted to suit larger venues. Small
stillwaters offer huge variety and are often well
stocked with hard fighting Rainbow Trout; just
knowing there are a few fish close at hand does
wonders for the confidence. However there is
more to small venues than just catching fish.
Our
core business is introducing novice and
improving anglers to the benefits of improving their
skills on small stillwater venues. Short, well
presented casts will catch plenty of fish while all
manner of tactics such as dry fly, nymphs and
sinking line techniques can be honed to perfection.
Small Stillwater's are often open all year which
means we are able to run courses throughout the
season. A one day start up package with all
equipment, one to one instruction and permits can
cost as little as £150.00

FLY FISHING
RESERVOIRS & LAKES |
 |
Many anglers will
remember their first session on a large venue.
Staring across acre after acre of baron, dead
looking water sees many rushing back to the comfort
zone of something a little smaller, see above!
The reality is that many large reservoirs are
stocked with the fish that also end up in small
stillwaters, therefore the Trout are in effect the
same! So what makes the task so much more
difficult? The venue size is of course an
issue but mainly Trout that have large areas of
water at their disposal very quickly adapt to the
natural food demanding a thoughtful approach to
outwit them. Nick Hart provides guided
experiences on a variety of large venues across the
West Country from both boat and bank. A
typical session will cover many aspects of modern
reservoir fishing and is certain to help even the
most unconfident angler. Guided sessions are
tailored to requirements and can cover a variety of
topics or a specific tactic/technique including Dry
Fly, Buzzer Fishing, Intermediate line tactics and
much more.

FLY FISHING FOR
STILLWATER BROWN TROUT |
 |
There is something very
special about the Brown Trout, it is after all our
indigenous species which has become world famous.
Here in the West Country we are lucky enough to have
many river fishing venues stuffed full of Wild
Browns or Brownies as we affectionately refer to
them. But we are also blessed with a few Brown
Trout only stillwater venues such as Roadford and
Fernworthy. Fly Fishing these venues is
fantastic fun and a great way to practice in
readiness for fishing in locations such as the
Scottish or Irish lochs where Brown Trout reign
supreme. The approach to this tenacious fish
is somewhat different to that of the everyday
Rainbows that provide the bulk of our reservoir
sport. If you would like to experience an
early morning session fishing at close range for
Brown Trout in the margins or to enjoy the thrill of
stalking Browns with dry fly please contact
Nick
for further details.
